Softball Earns Sweep Over Grove City and Houghton

MELBOURNE, Fla.-- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology softball team earned the sweep on the fourth day of their spring trip with a pair of victories over Grove City (5-3) and Houghton (8-3). This improves the team to 5-3 overall this season, just two wins shy of their 2023 total.

In the first game of the day against Grove City, the Wolverines jumped to a 2-0 lead after four innings.

Jessica Newsom doubled home Caledonia Coleman to get the Fightin' Engineers started in the fifth, and a triple by Aubrey Smith put Rose in front, bringing in Newsom and Katie Palmer to put Rose-Hulman in front 3-2. Rose-Hulman added one more run in the inning with a single by Kayla Schnippel to bring home Smith for an insurance run to stretch the lead to 4-2.

The Fightin' Engineers would hold onto their lead to claim their fourth win of the season. Audrey Thuering earned the win in the circle pitching 4.0 innings with two strikeouts, and Smith earned her first career save after pitching the final three innings.

In the second game of the day against Houghton, Rose-Hulman took control in the bottom of the second inning. Lucille Pyrz and Coleman brought home runs. Then, a 2-run single by Katelyn Sarvis to score Phoebe Worstell and Schnippel stretched the lead to 4-0 in the third.

Schnippel would bring home two runs in the 4th and two more runs in the 6th to help the Fightin' Engineers build a comfortable lead at 8-2 heading into the final frame. Rose-Hulman was able to hold off the Highlanders comeback attempt to claim their second win of the day and their first two-game win streak of the season.

Worstell was credited the win in the circle pitching 6.1 innings with two strikeouts, and Smith came in to shut down the comeback attempt with a pair of strikeouts to close out the game.

The Fightin' Engineers will wrap up their spring trip on Friday, March 1 as they take on Alma at 10 AM and Grove City at 12:15 PM.
