TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team came up short in their second-half comeback with a 78-73 loss at Hanover.
Hanover got off to a hot start with a 10-0 lead, but the Fightin' Engineers responded and got the game tied up at 20-20 at the end of the first.Â
The Panthers would outscore Rose-Hulman 38-18 in the next 19 minutes of game time and build a 20-point lead with a minute to go in the third as it looked like they would roll to a victory.
However, Rose-Hulman would not go away. The Fightin' Engineers responded with a 23-6 run over the next seven minutes to cut the lead to three with four minutes remaining.
They would then get the lead down to two at 72-70 with just 13 seconds remaining, but the Panthers would ice the game with free throws late.
Ashley Black led the team with 21 points as she tied her career-highs with 5 three-pointers made and 8 rebounds.Â
Jamie Baum also added 20 points and 4 assists in the loss.Â
With the duo of Black and Baum each scoring 20 or more, they became the first pair of Rose-Hulman teammates to both score 20 points or more in a single game in over 17 years. The last duo to do so was a pair of Rose-Hulman Athletic Hall of Famers, Suzy Carlson and Rebekah Forsyth, who did it in a 78-68 win over Hendrix in 2006.
Grace Roland was the only other Fightin' Engineer in double figures with 10.
Emilia Diaz tied her career-high with 3 assists and added 4 points.
The Fightin' Engineers fall to 11-11 on the season and 8-7 in the conference. They will return to action on Saturday, February 10 at 1 PM as they travel on the road for a big game against Mount St. Joseph.
