TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball team split the Saturday doubleheader with Calvin with an 11-7 win in game 1 and a 13-1 loss in game 2. Overall, the Fightin' Engineers took down the Knights 2-1 in the three-game series.
Calvin opened the scoring with a home run in the top of the first inning of game one, but Rose-Hulman answered with three in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double from
Colter Couillard-Rodak and an RBI single from
Michael Stenger.
The Knights got one back in the third, but the Fightin' Engineers would score one in the third, five in the fourth, and one in the fifth to stretch the lead to 10-2. Stenger would add an RBI single, and
Connor O'Connell and Stenger would go back-to-back with a three-run home run and a solo home run in the fourth.
Ryland Hixon and O'Connell would each add another RBI with a pair of singles.
Calvin would come back with two in the sixth and three in the seventh, but
Schuyler Wilcox would come in and lock it down with 2.1 innings of shutout baseball en route to his first save of the season.
Ian Kline earned the win going 6.0 innings with 2 strikeouts and 4 earned runs allowed.
In the second game, Calvin would have another hot start with three runs in the second inning on only one hit. Rose-Hulman would get one back in the second on an RBI double by
Tyler Otroszko, but it would be all Knights from that point on. A seven run sixth inning would put the game out of reach as they held on for a 13-1 victory.
Peter Rogers, Stenger, and
Kade Kline led the team with three hits on the day. O'Connell and Stenger each added 4 and 3 RBIs.
The Fightin' Engineers move to 7-5 overall on the season. They return to action on Wednesday, March 20 at 6 PM as they host the Greenville Panthers at Art Nehf Field.
