Softball Sweeps Fontbonne With Two Exciting Comeback Wins

PHOTOS

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.-- The Rose-Hulman softball team hosted Fontbonne University on Saturday in a doubleheader for their home opener. The Fightin' Engineers earned the sweep defeating the Griffins in comeback fashion in both games with final scores of 6-5 and 8-5. This improves the team to 8-4 overall surpassing their win total from the 2023 season.

Rose-Hulman struggled early in the first game of the day. The Griffins built a 5-0 lead after some rough play by the Fightin' Engineers heading into the final frame.

Jessica Newsom brought the team back in the game with a three run homer in the bottom of the seventh to decrease the deficit. The rally continued with another home run by Katelyn Sarvis that scored two runs to tie the game at 5-5 and send the contest into extra innings.

Newsom tripled in the eighth inning to bring in Katie Palmer for the walk-off win. Aubrey Smith earned the win in the circle pitching 7.1 innings with a career-high nine strikeouts.

In the second game, Fontbonne jumped to a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. Newsom connected with her second home run of the day to tie the game at 3-3.

Fontbonne answered with two runs in the second to stand ahead 5-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth. The Engineers then started clicking offensively with multiple base hits to regain the lead 8-5.

Smith came in during the sixth inning to earn her second win of the day in the circle pitching 2.0 innings while only allowing two hits.

Rose-Hulman will hit the road to take on Webster University on Saturday, March 23 at 1 PM and 3 PM CT.
