TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball team split their HCAC season opening doubleheader with the Mount St. Joseph Lions on Saturday with a 7-3 loss and 12-6 victory.

In a pitcher's dual, Mount St. Joseph was able to score two unearned runs in the second inning of the first game after an error and a pair of hits to take an early 2-0 lead. Rose-Hulman would get one back in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Connor O'Connell to score Colter Couillard-Rodak, following a double from Dalton Busboom.

Mount St. Joseph would take control of the game in the seventh with five runs to extend their lead to 7-1. Rose-Hulman would battle back in the ninth with two runs to cut the lead to 7-4 after a bases loaded walk by Jonathan Oliger. The tying run would come to the plate, but the Mount St. Joseph closer retired back to back batters to win the game.

Michael Yager pitched great in the start, going 6.1 innings of 7 hit, 4 earned run baseball. He finished with a season-high 9 strikeouts, just one shy of his career-high, and he only walked one batter.

Caleb Mosteller recorded 2 innings of shutout baseball in relief for his season debut.

O'Connell led the team with 2 hits, 1 RBI, and 1 run scored at the dish for Rose-Hulman.

In the second game, Rose-Hulman jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with a five-run third inning. They used their speed to force three Mount St. Joseph throwing errors, and they also scored a pair of runs on wild pitches. O'Connell recorded an RBI single, and Peter Rogers tacked on an RBI double in the inning.

The Fightin' Engineers added two more in the fourth on an RBI triple from Couillard-Rodak and a sacrifice fly from O'Connell. Ryland Hixon and Kade Kline would single home two more runs in the fifth to stretch the lead to 9-0.

Mount St. Joseph got back in the ball game with 2 in the sixth and 3 in the seventh, but the Fightin' Engineers tacked on three more in the eighth on RBIs from Kline, Couillard-Rodak, and Dalton Busboom.

The Fightin' Engineers would hold on for the 12-6 victory, and Alec Lewandowski would pick up his first win of the season with a season-high 5 innings pitched of shutout baseball.

Evan Chung pitched well in relief with 2.2 innings pitched and just 2 hits and 1 earned run allowed.

Couillard-Rodak added a three-hit game with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs in the win, and Rogers tallied 2 hits, 2 RBIs and a run.

Rose-Hulman moves to 9-6 on the season and 1-1 in the HCAC with the doubleheader split. The Fightin' Engineers return to action on Sunday, March 24 at 12 PM and 3 PM at Franklin College.
