Baseball Drops Both Games to the Pioneers in Lexington

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball team fell short in both games of Saturday's doubleheader with the Pioneers. Rose-Hulman dropped the first game 5-4 before falling 16-6 in the second game.

In the first game, it was another pitchers dual with Ian Kline and Transylvania's Luke Patton each delivering five shutout innings to start the game. The Fightin' Engineers got the scoring started in the top of the sixth on an RBI groundout from Dalton Busboom and a pair of RBI singles from Peter Rogers and Josh Erpenbeck to take a 3-0 lead.

Transylvania would retake the lead in the bottom of the inning as they tallied five hits to bring four runs across the plate.

Rose-Hulman would load the bases in the top of the seventh inning, but the Pioneers would get a crucial double play ball to limit the damage to one run and keep the game tied at 4.

After the Pioneers retook the lead 5-4, Mark Serdinak doubled in the top of the ninth inning, but Rose-Hulman was unable to push him across and they fell 5-4 in the opening game of the day.

Kline finished the game with 6.0 innings pitched and 6 strikeouts after giving up 8 hits and 4 earned runs. Alec Lewandowski was handed the loss after giving up just one run in his two innings of relief.

In the second game, the Fightin' Engineers jumped out to an early lead in the first inning after Kade Kline and Josh Erpenbeck singled to start the game and would come around and score.

However, just like in game one, the Pioneers had an immediate answer as they scored five runs in the first, four in the second, and two more in the third. Rose-Hulman continued to chip away with one run in the second, third, and fourth on a solo home run from Rogers, an RBI single from Connor O'Connell, and a bases loaded error by Transylvania, but the Pioneers would still lead 12-5 after four.

After a scoreless fifth, the Fightin' Engineers put together three consecutive two-out singles, and the RBI single from Busboom cut the lead to 12-6, but Transylvania tacked on four more runs to win 16-6.

With the losses, Rose-Hulman falls to 11-10 on the season and 3-4 in the HCAC. The Fightin' Engineers return to action next weekend as they host the Bluffton Beavers in a three-game series. Saturday's doubleheader will be at 3 PM and 6 PM with Sunday's single game commencing at 12 PM.
