DEFIANCE, Ohio -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball team rolled to a 10-3 victory over Defiance on Saturday evening in the opening game of the three-game series between the Fightin' Engineers and the Yellow Jackets. The teams will return to Defiance High School on Sunday for games at 1 PM and 4 PM to round out the series. With the games being played at Defiance High School, there will be no live video stream available.
The Fightin' Engineers took an early 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by
Peter Rogers. In the second, Rose-Hulman would stretch their lead to 7-0 on a pair of two-run singles from
Colter Couillard-Rodak and
Dalton Busboom, an RBI triple from
Michael Stenger, and a sacrifice fly by
Mark Serdinak.
Rose-Hulman then added one in the fifth on an RBI single by
Mark Serdinak and two more in the sixth on an RBI double by Couillard-Rodak and an RBI single by
Connor O'Connell to stretch the lead to 10-0.
The Yellow Jackets would get on the board in the sixth with a two-out three-run home run.
After a solo home run by
Colton Brown in the seven, Defiance would answer by turning five hits, 2 walks, and a hit by pitch into seven runs off of three different Rose-Hulman pitchers to cut the lead to 11-10.
Schuyler Wilcox was able to close out the seventh and pitch a scoreless eighth before turning it over to
Jonathan Oliger in the ninth to close out the game with a three up, three down ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts.
Michael Yager was lights out through 5.2 innings, allowing just two hits and no runs, but he would struggle in his final 0.2 innings, giving up 7 earned runs.
Every player in the Rose-Hulman lineup recorded a hit, and seven of the nine recorded an RBI in the win.
Kade Kline led the team with 3 hits and 3 runs, and
Couillard-Rodak led with 3 RBIs while adding 2 hits and 2 runs.
With the win, Rose-Hulman improves to 19-14 on the season and 10-6 in the HCAC. The Fightin' Engineers will return to action on Sunday, April 28 at 1 PM and 4 PM to conclude their three-game series with Defiance.
