ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology baseball team dropped a nail-biter to Washington University in St. Louis on Tuesday afternoon.
WashU got off to an early lead with one run in the second and two in the third as it looked as if they were in full control with a 3-0 lead.
The Fightin' Engineers bounced back in the fourth with three runs to tie the game on three straight hits from
Peter Rogers,
Colter Couillard-Rodak, and
Connor O'Connell and a 2-out RBI double by
Michael Stenger.
The Bears retook the lead in the fifth on an infield single with two outs that allowed a run to score.
Rose-Hulman got a runner into scoring position in the seventh after a leadoff double by Stenger, and a strikeouts and wild pitch put runners at 2nd and 3rd with two outs, but WashU was able to get out of the jam with the lead and hold on to the 4-3 victory.
Couillard-Rodak and Stenger each led the team with 2 hits and 4 total bases at the plate.
On the mound,
Alec Lewandowski got the start and went 2.1 innings, giving up 3 runs (2 earned), 6 hits, and 2 walks with 3 strikeouts.
Brad Nardi and
Schuyler Wilcox pitched lights out in the bullpen with 5.2 innings pitched combined of 3 hit, 1 run baseball in the loss.
The Fightin' Engineers snapped their three-game win streak and fall to 14-11 on the season. They will return to action on Saturday, April 13 as they host the Earlham Quakers in an HCAC doubleheader.
