GRINNELL, Iowa -- The Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers volleyball team traveled to Grinnell College for the second day of the Central/Grinnell Tournament on Saturday. The team dropped both of their matches against Simpson 3-2 and St. Mary's (MN) 3-1. This puts the team at 2-2 overall after the opening weekend of their 2024 season.
The Fightin' Engineers got off to a strong start in their first match against Simpson. The team stood ahead 2-1 heading into the fourth set. Simpson rallied to force the fifth set and ultimately earned the win with a score of 15-11 in the final set.
Desiree Beverley led the team with 13 kills in the contest and a hitting percentage of .278.
Julia Irmen was the team's assist leader with 17 against the Storm.
Lily Ebright was the standout defensively tallying 35 digs in the match.
Rose-Hulman faced St. Mary's (MN) in the final match of the tournament. After being tied 1-1, the Cardinals were able to edge out the Fightin' Engineers ending the third set on a 4-1 run to win 25-21. St. Mary's went on to dominate the fourth set to hand Rose-Hulman their second loss of the season.
Beverley led the team in the second game of the day with 11 kills. Irmen was the team's assist leader with 12, and Ebright continued to shine for the defense with 35 digs.
Rose-Hulman will travel to face Webster University on Wednesday, September 4 at 7 PM CT before returning home for their home tournament on Friday, September 6, and Saturday, September 7.
