TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's volleyball team picked up a 3-2 victory in a five-set thriller against Olivet on Friday night in the opening game of the Rose-Hulman Volleyball Invitational.
Hannah Bergfeld was the star of the night for the Fightin' Engineers as she became just the sixth Rose-Hulman player in school history to record a triple double in a match. She finished the match with 22 assists, 14 digs, 10 kills, and 9 service aces. Her 9 service aces is also the third-most in school history and the most in a single-match since Casey Levitt in 2012. She finished the match just one service ace away from becoming the first player in the history of Rose-Hulman volleyball to record a quadruple double.
Desiree Beverley also recorded a career-high 22 kills for Rose-Hulman in the win. She became the first player since
Sophia Koop in 2021 to record 20+ kills in a single match.
The Fightin' Engineers opened the match with a bang in the first set as they recorded 16 kills, 0 attack errors, and .533 hitting percentage in the first set en route to a 25-16 victory. However, they would fall behind 2-1 after dropping sets two and three.
In the fourth set, Rose-Hulman came out with a bang and led 8-2 early on. They would continue to keep up that momentum and roll to a 25-13 victory in the set thanks to 12 kills and a .273 hitting percentage.
The Fightin' Engineers crowd got into it in the fifth and helped will Rose-Hulman to a victory. With the match knotted up at 7-7, the Fightin' Engineers rattled off seven of the next eight points to take a commanding 14-8 lead. The Comets would battle back with 5 consecutive points, but a service error on the final point gave Rose-Hulman the 3-2 victory.
Jillian Gregg finished the match 12 kills and 13 digs for her 14th career double double and the first of the season.
Julia Irmen added her first career double double with 21 assists and 10 digs.
Ellie Harshany also tallied 14 digs to make it five Fightin' Engineers with 10+ digs in a match for the first time since a win over Anderson in 2022.
The Fightin' Engineers came from behind two sets to one to win for the first time in 22 matches. The team will return to action on Saturday, September 7 at 11 AM and 1 PM as they host the Trine Thunder and the Greenville Panthers in the second day of the Rose-Hulman Volleyball Invitational.
