TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman volleyball team hosted the second day of their first home invitational of the season on Saturday. The team fell short in both of their matches suffering losses to Trine 3-2 and Greenville 3-1. This drops the Fightin' Engineers to 3-5 overall this season.Â
Rose-Hulman looked strong in the first match of the day against Trine. The team got off to a hot start claiming the first set 25-10. Rose-Hulman went on to win a close second set against Trine coming down to the final moments. After being tied 23-23, the Fightin' Engineers were able to string together two points winning the set on a service ace by
Julia Irmen.Â
Trine bounced back to claim a win in the third set 25-18 and win a tight fourth set 25-23 to force the fifth-set tiebreaker. Rose-Hulman struggled to stop the Thunder's momentum as Trine finished the comeback win claiming the fifth set 15-11.
Hannah Bergfeld was the star for the Fightin' Engineers earning her second triple-double in a row finishing the match with 10 kills, 26 assists, and 16 digs.
Desiree Beverley and
Amaya Harrell also reached double figures in kills with 15 and 11.
Lily Ebright was the defensive standout finishing the match with 44 digs.Â
The second match of the day against Greenville proved to be a competitive one for the Fightin' Engineers. The team fell behind after falling in the first two sets 25-21 and 25-23. Rose-Hulman earned a hard-fought win in the third set after back-to-back blocks by Harrell solidified the win 30-28.
Rose-Hulman would ultimately go on to lose the fourth set with a final of 25-16 giving Greenville the win in the match.
Jillian Gregg led the team with 11 kills while Ebright continued to shine defensively with 42 digs.Â
The Fightin' Engineers will return to action competing in the Wheaton Invitational on Friday, September 13, and Saturday, September 14. The team opens the invite facing Wheaton on Friday at 4 PM CT.Â
