TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team picked up a big conference victory on Wednesday evening with a 72-57 win over the Franklin Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies opened up the game by making 8 of their first 9 shots to build an 20-4 cushion early in the first quarter, but Rose-Hulman did not lay down as they battled back in the second quarter. With a 26-11 lead for Franklin, the Fightin' Engineers answered with a 16-0 and 23-2 run over the next eight minutes of the game to take a 34-28 lead.
Rose-Hulman would stretch their lead to the biggest of the game at 39-30 on a big three by
Jamie Baum for her 1,000th career point as a Fightin' Engineer. She becomes just the 11th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point mark despite only playing five games during her sophomore season.
The third quarter was back and forth with Franklin unable to cut the lead to one possession and Rose-Hulman unable to put the game away, but a 9-2 run in the fourth quarter helped build the lead to 15 and give the Fightin' Engineers the 72-57 victory.
Katelyn Fennell led the team with a career-high 23 points on 11-15 shooting for the freshman.
Jamie Baum scored 15 including her 1,000th career point. She also led the team with 6 assists and 6 blocks as well as adding 7 rebounds.
CK Gallegos Rodriguez picked up her second career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
With the win, the Fightin' Engineers improve to 9-10 overall and 6-6 in the HCAC. The win propels Rose-Hulman to sixth place in the HCAC, just one game behind the #4 seed and a chance to host in the opening round of the HCAC Tournament.
Rose-Hulman returns to action on Saturday, February 1 as they host the Berea Mountaineers for just the second time in program history.
