CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology women's basketball team came up just short in an overtime thriller at Mount St. Joseph with an 80-71 loss. The loss snaps the five-game winning streak for the Fightin' Engineers, the longest since the 2018-19 season.
The Lions took a big early lead in the first quarter as an 8-1 run helped stretch the lead to 16-7 in the first 10 minutes of the contest. The lead hit double figures in the second quarter, but the Fightin' Engineers were able to cut into the deficit and only trailed 28-22 at the halftime break.
In the third quarter, the offense took off for both teams and the Lions were able to stretch the lead back to double figures at 44-34, but Rose-Hulman responded again and ended the third quarter with a 12-0 run including a last second running three by
Maria Godoy-Rodriguez to take their first lead since 2-0 at 46-44.
The Rose-Hulman run would be capped at 15-0 as the Fightin' Engineers led 49-44 with 8:57 remaining in the contest, but Mount St. Joseph answered with a 9-0 run of their own over the next 1:53 to led 53-49.
Despite Mount St. Joseph extending the lead to seven with 3:05 remaining, Rose-Hulman would not stop fighting and responded with an 8-0 run, again capped off by a floater by
Maria Godoy-Rodriguez to take the one-point lead with one minute remaining. The Lions would tie the game with a free throw and the game would go to overtime.
In the overtime period, Mount St. Joseph was able to pull away to the 80-71 victory with a 9-0 run late in the period to leave Rose-Hulman still looking for their first win in a game that goes to overtime since 2013.
Emma Schipp led the Fightin' Engineers with 14 points in the loss, and
Sophia Reese also added 12 points, 4 assists, and 4 steals.
Jamie Baum led the team with 12 rebounds and 5 assists while adding 9 in the scoring column.
CK Gallegos-Rodriguez and
Emilia Diaz also reached double figures with 10 in the loss.
With the loss, Rose-Hulman falls to 7-6 on the season and 4-2 in the HCAC.The team returns to action on Saturday as they host the Transylvania Pioneers at 1 PM.
