TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Fightin' Engineers came up shy of Bluffton, falling by a score of 30-27 in a double overtime thriller.
The Beavers would record the opening score of the game, where Tywuan Clark threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Braydon Hower.
The Fightin' Engineers would respond with a 64-yard drive, where
Jay Smith and
Alexander Marsteller each recorded 12-yard runs to convert on third down. The drive would end with
Adam Yue completing a pass to
Austin Porter, where he scored a four-yard touchdown with 1:33 left in the first quarter.
Bluffton led off the second by relying on their run game for nine consecutive plays, where Jaivon Hudson scored a one-yard touchdown. The team would add a 26-yard field goal on their following possession, extending the lead to 17-7.
The Fightin' Engineers ran a successful a two-minute drill to conclude the half, where Smith recorded 13 and 15-yard runs, which helped set up a 28-yard field goal from
Trevor Saguto right before the half.
Rose-Hulman would conclude the half down 17-10, where Smith recorded 97 rushing yards. On the defensive side,
Wyatt Bell recorded a team-high five tackles while
Gabe Adams and
Rudy Griffing each added five.
The Fightin' Engineers opened the third quarter by driving down the field and converting a 28-yard field goal from Saguto to cut the lead to four.
On Bluffton's following possession, they found themselves deep in Rose-Hulman territory, as they were faced with a 4
th and 1 from the 11-yard line. Jaivon Hudson took a handoff up the middle, where he was stuffed at the line by Griffing to force a turnover on downs.
The Beavers got the ball back at the start of the fourth, and they were able to take a 24-13 lead with eight minutes remaining, on a seven-yard touchdown run from Jamarrion Banks.
Rose-Hulman's defense would come up big later in the fourth, as they forced a turnover on downs on their own 23.
Austin Hastings broke up what would have been a first down throw, giving the Fightin' Engineers possession with 4:50 remaining.
With Rose-Hulman facing 4
th and 15, Yue completed a pass to
Austin Porter for 25 yards to give RHIT the first down. He would later add three straight completions, as he threw an eight-yard pass to
Alexander Marsteller to convert on third down, before completing consecutive passes to
Ben Klein for gains of 11 and 13 yards.
Faced with a 4
th and 10 from the 12-yard line, Yue came through in the clutch once again as he threw a touchdown to
Avery Cody to keep Rose-Hulman alive. The Fightin' Engineers would go for two, and Yue completed a pass to
Joseph Culotta in the endzone to make it a 24-21 game.
The Fightin' Engineers lined up for their onside attempt, and
Brendan Tanksley made a perfect onside kick that was recovered by the Fightin' Engineers.
Yue would then convert on a 3
rd and five on a nine-yard run, before adding a 12-yard completion to Cody and a 15-yard completion to Porter.
With 20-seconds remaining, Saguto converted a 31-yard field goal to send the game to overtime.
Bluffton would receive the ball first in overtime, where they drove down to the two-yard line. Facing a 3
rd and two, Banks ran up the middle, where he was tackled by
Marshall Koch and
Antonio Barnes. On 4
th down, Banks tried running up the middle once again, but he was died by Austin Hasting and
Jaxon Naviaux to force a turnover on downs.
The Fightin' Engineers were unable to score in the first overtime period, and they started with the ball in the second period of overtime. A six-yard catch by Porter set up a Saguto field goal attempt, where he converted a 36-yarder to put Rose-Hulman ahead.
The Beavers would respond with a 25-yard touchdown pass on their first play of the period, as Niegel Payne caught a pass in the endzone to secure the win.
Jay Smith finished the game with 167 rushing yards, averaging 5.2 yards per carry.
Adam Yue completed 20-39 of his passes, finishing the day with 174 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
Austin Porter recorded a team-high seven receptions for 63 yards, while both he and
Avery Cody caught one touchdown.
On the defensive side,
Rudy Griffing recorded a team-high 12 tackles (eight solo) while adding one tackle for loss.
Gabe Adams added 11 tackles with one sack and
Wyatt Bell recorded a total of nine tackles (seven solo).
Rose-Hulman will hit the road as they take on Manchester, Saturday, November 1 at 1:30 PM.
