Joey Schmitz Named HCAC Athlete of the Week Following Career-High Performance

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Sophomore Joey Schmitz has been named the HCAC Athlete of the Week for the third time in his career.
 
The Fightin' Engineers opened the season with a 1-1 record, where they lost to Wabash 85-68, and defeated Illinois Tech in a thrilling 73-72 victory.
 
Schmitz scored a game-high 20 points against Wabash, where he shot 8-12 (66.7%) from the floor and 2-4 (50.0%) from beyond the arc.
 
The Bargersville, Ind. native followed up that performance by dropping a career-high 32 points against Illinois Tech on sensational shooting splits. Schmitz shot 11-18 (61.1%) from the floor, while going 7-9 (77.8%) from three-point range.
 
With Rose-Hulman down by one against Illinois Tech, Schmitz drew a foul with 18 seconds remaining. He stepped up to the line and knocked down both free throws, which secured the 73-72 win for the Fightin' Engineers.
 
The mechanical engineering major concluded the week averaging 26.0 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. He shot 19-30 (63.3%) from the floor, 9-13 (69.2%) from three, and 5-6 (83.3%) at the free throw line.
 
The Fightin' Engineers will continue their season at the WashU Tournament as they face Wisconsin-La Crosse on Friday, November 21 at 6 PM ET (5 PM CT).
