Rose-Hulman Takes Down Transylvania to Advance to HCAC Title Game

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Fightin' Engineers are heading to the HCAC Championship Match as Rose-Hulman took down the Transylvania Pioneers 3-1 in the HCAC Semifinals!

Rose-Hulman took advantage of their first opportunity eight minutes in, where Lena Darini made a downfield pass to Sydnee Schuler. Schuler immediately attempted a cross towards the middle, which Lauren Marquardt kicked in to give RHIT the lead.

The Pioneers attempted their first shot of the game in the 34th minute, which sailed over the goal.

Four minutes later, Schuler recorded a steal, and she launched a deep shot towards the goal, which was saved by Carrie Stevens on a jumping deflection.

Schuler added another shot on goal in the 41st, after she received a pass from Iliana Hernandez. She took one touch and fired a shot from the far-right side, over Steven's outstretched arms and into the top left corner of the goal.

The Fightin' Engineers concluded the half with a 2-0 lead, where they attempted three shots on goal. On the defensive side, RHIT allowed just one shot and zero shots on goal.

Rose-Hulman continued to thrive on the offensive end, as Hernandez attempted a 51st-minute shot down the middle, which was saved. Two minutes later, Emma Johns crossed a pass to Gaby Hansen, and she added a shot on goal of her own that was also saved.

Transylvania was awarded a free kick in the 61st, where Jaimye Cottongim attempted a pass towards the goal. Gracie Carrigan fired a shot from close range, which was deflected away on a phenomenal diving save by Brooke Spurlock. Olivia Thomas recovered the deflection and scored a goal to cut the lead to 2-1.

Marquardt launched a 67th-minute free kick on target, which was hauled in on a jumping save. Three minutes later, Schuler crossed a pass to Alex Adams, where her shot from point-blank range was deflected away.

The Pioneers had a great opportunity to tie the game in the 73rd-minute, as Makenna Johnson took a shot from deep inside the box. She would be denied by another sensational save from Spurlock, which kept Rose-Hulman in the lead.

With Rose-Hulman driving downfield, Marquardt and Adams each made great passes, where they found Schuler wide open on the right side. Schuler dribbled towards the net, and scored her second goal of the game on a shot into the left corner of the goal, securing the 3-1 victory for Rose-Hulman.

Schuler finished the match with two goals and one assist, giving her a team-high six goals and seven assists on the season.

Marquardt also recorded both a goal and an assist in the victory, tying Marquardt with a team-high six goals while adding five assists this year.

The Fightin' Engineers have now advanced to the HCAC Championship game, where they will host the Hanover Panthers on Saturday, November 8, at 7 PM.
