TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology freshman Joey Schmitz was named the HCAC Newcomer of the Year and earned 2nd-Team All-HCAC honors, and senior Miles McGowen added 1st-Team All-Conference recognition, in teams determined by the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference coaches and released on Wednesday.

Schmitz had a record-breaking season for the Fightin' Engineers as he broke the single-season HCAC record for threes made in a season with 59. He has also made 76 threes this season, just three triples shy of the breaking the all-time Rose-Hulman single-season record, currently held by Britt Petty in 1990. He is the first Fightin' Engineer since 2008 to make more than 60 threes in a season.

The freshman mechanical engineering major leads the team in scoring this season with 13.5 points per game on 43% shooting from the floor and 42% shooting from beyond the arc. He is also leading the team with 46 steals on the season, and he has recorded six games with 3 or more steals on the year.

The Bargersville, Indiana native is just the second Rose-Hulman player in program history to earn Newcomer of the Year honors, joining Dillon Duff in 2021. He is also the first freshman to be named to 1st-Team or 2nd-Team All-Conference since Craig McGee in 2018.

McGowen earned his third All-HCAC honor of his career this year after being named first-team All-HCAC. He is the all-time leader in Rose-Hulman history in offensive rebounds with 278 in his career, shattering the former school record of 192 set by Troy Halt in 1996.

The senior chemical engineering major is averaging just shy of a double-double this season with 12.2 points and 9.4 rebounds per game on the year. He has pulled down 86 offensive rebounds which is just four away from tying his own school record set in 2022. McGowen will end his career with three of the top four all-time single-season offensive rebound totals with 90 in 2022, 72 in 2023, and 86 so far in 2024.

The Indianapolis, Indiana native is the seventh player in Rose-Hulman history to become a three-time All-HCAC honoree after earning 2nd-Team honors in 2023 and 1st-Team honors in 2024 and 2025. He is the first player to become a three-time all-HCAC selection since Craig McGee in 2020.

The Fightin' Engineers have reached the HCAC Semifinals on Friday night and battle Franklin College at 7 PM at Anderson. With a win, Rose-Hulman will advance to the conference title game with a chance to qualify for their first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance since 2014.
