RICHMOND, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers traveled to take on the Earlham Quakers to start HCAC play on Saturday. The team won the first game with a final score of 11-1 and fell short in the second game 8-5. This moves the team to 7-7 overall and 1-1 in the HCAC this season.
The Fightin' Engineers were red-hot at the plate in the first game of the doubleheader. After Earlham took the lead with a run in the first inning, Rose-Hulman took over the game.Â
Jonathan Oliger hit a sacrifice fly to tie the score with a run by
Mark Serdinak in the third. Rose-Hulman followed that with a two-run homer by Serdinak in the fifth inning to jump in front.Â
It would be all Fightin' Engineers after that, with a two-run home run by
Colton Brown making the score 6-1 in the sixth inning. Rose-Hulman continued to extend their lead to earn a convincing victory in game one.Â
Brady Strawmyer was lights out on the mound pitching 7.0 innings with five strikeouts while only allowing one earned run.Â
Earlham came out strong in the second game of the doubleheader. The Quakers jumped to a 4-0 lead after the first inning. Another run by Earlham would make the score 5-0 in the third inning.Â
Rose-Hulman would answer with two runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth to tie the game at 5-5. The Quakers took back the lead for good, putting up three runs in the seventh inning to hand Rose-Hulman their first conference loss of the season.
Otroszko led the team at the plate, finishing one home run away from hitting the cycle. He finished the second game going 3-5 with one run and two RBIs. The team used a variety of pitchers with
Andrew Noblitt suffering the loss after pitching 1.0 innings with two strikeouts.Â
Rose-Hulman will continue their conference schedule by hosting Berea on Tuesday, March 25, at 2 PM and 5 PM.Â
