MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team picked up two wins on the second day of their Florida Trip, defeating Concordia Chicago 6-4 and taking down Rivier 4-2. This advances the Fightin' Engineers to 3-1 overall this season.
The Fighitn' Engineers faced Concordia Chicago for the second time this week in their first game of the day. Both teams played well defensively leading to a scoreless game after five innings.
Rose-Hulman got the bats going in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs.
Phoebe Worstell,
Kaitlyn Sarvis,
Gabrielle Ezzell, and
Jaelen Matsuda-Williams all rounded the bases to put the Fightin' Engineers in front.
Concordia Chicago answered in the bottom of the sixth, putting up four runs to tie the game heading into the final frame.
A sacrifice fly by Worstell brought in
Jessica Newsom, and a sacrifice bunt by Ezzell scored a run by
Aubrey Smith to regain the lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Fightin' Engineers were able to hold off the Cougars in the bottom of the seventh to claim the win. Smith earned the win in the circle pitching a complete game going 7.0 innings with three strikeouts.
Rose-Hulman earned a comeback victory in the second game of the day against Rivier.
The Raiders took an early lead with a score of 2-1 after the second inning. Both teams struggled to score with the score staying the same heading into the sixth inning.
Rose-Hulman rallied offensively, putting up three runs in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead. A double by
Caledonia Coleman brought in
Kayla Schnippel and Sarvis. Then
Emily Hodges snuck in another run at the end of the inning to give the Fightin' Engineers a two-run lead.
Rose-Hulman held on in the top of the seventh to defeat the Raiders and complete the sweep. Worstell was credited the win in the circle pitching a complete 7.0 innings with three strikeouts.
Rose-Hulman will continue their Florida Trip with a doubleheader against John Carroll and Houghton on Wednesday, March 5, at 10 AM and 2:30 PM.
