MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers split their doubleheader on the third day of their Florida Trip. The team fell short in their first game against John Carroll 4-0 and defeated Houghton in their second game 5-4. This puts the team at 4-2 overall this season.
In the first game of the day against John Carroll, Rose-Hulman fell behind in the second inning after giving up two runs.
The Fightin' Engineers struggled to get going offensively and would give up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to suffer the loss to the Blue Streaks.
Audrey Theuring represented Rose-Hulman in the circle in her first start of the season pitching 4.2 innings with three strikeouts.
In the second game against Houghton, the Fightin' Engineers found themselves in a battle. The team got the bats going early with two runs in the first inning with runs scored by
Aubrey Smith and
Phoebe Worstell.
Houghton answered to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the second. After each team added another run, the score stood tied 3-3 heading into the sixth inning.
Smith stepped up for Rose-Hulman with a triple in the bottom of the sixth to bring in runs by
Jessica Newsom and
Megan Newton to put the team back in front 5-3.
Rose-Hulman held off the Highlanders in the final inning, only allowing one run to score to claim the win 5-4.
Kayla Schnippel got the start in the circle pitching 4.0 innings with one strikeout.
Audrey Theuring earned the win, finishing the last 3.0 innings with five strikeouts.
The Fightin' Engineers will continue their Florida Trip taking on Misericordia and Mount Mary on Thursday, March 6, at 4:45 PM and 7 PM.
