MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team split their doubleheader on Thursday night, falling to Misericordia in a close game 11-10 and defeating Mount Mary 11-7. This moves the Fightin' Engineers to 5-3 overall this season.
In the first game of the day, Rose-Hulman had their most productive day at the plate this season totaling 14 hits against Misericordia.
The game was tied 2-2 in the second inning before a single by
Aubrey Smith brought in a run by
Lucille Pyrz to take the lead 3-2. The team would add two more runs in the second to extend their lead to 5-2.
The Cougars battled back with a productive fifth inning to regain the lead, scoring five runs to make the score 8-6.
Rose-Hulman tried to edge their way back into the lead after a double by
Phoebe Worstell brought in runs by Smith and
Jessica Newsom to cut the deficit to one run heading into the final frame with the score at 10-9.
The team fell short in a strong effort in the seventh inning to drop their first game of the doubleheader against the Cougars. Worstell suffered the loss in the circle pitching 1.1 innings with two strikeouts.
In the second game of the day, Rose-Hulman continued to produce offensively. The team totaled 12 hits on 11 runs to take down the Blue Angels.
The team got our to an early lead putting up three runs in the first inning. As the game continued Mount Mary was able to take the lead in the third inning after a flurry of hits made the score 6-4.
A walk with the bases loaded brought in a run by
Megan Newton in the fourth inning to make the score 6-5. Then Smith would put the Fightin' Engineers back on top with a double to bring in three runs and put the team back in control with a score of 8-6.
Smith finished the game with her first home run of the season in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach of Mount Mary and lead the team to a win 11-7.
Kayla Schnippel earned the win in the circle pitching 0.2 innings and Smith earned a save finishing out the last four innings of the game with four strikeouts.
Rose-Hulman will wrap up their Florida Trip by taking on Houghton and Concordia (MN) on Friday, March 7 at 10 AM and 12:15 PM.
