MELBOURNE, Fla. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team wrapped up their Flordia Trip with a split in their doubleheader on Friday. The team defeated Houghton in their first game 14-1 and suffered a loss to Concordia (MN) with a score of 2-0. The team finishes their trip to Florida with a record of 6-4 overall to start the year.
In the first game of the day, Rose-Hulman took care of business defeating Houghton in five innings.
Jessica Newsom was perfect at the plate going 3-3 with one run and three RBIs.
Aubrey Smith was another standout going 2-3 with one run and four RBIs.
The team started off hot, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. The Fightin' Engineers continued to dominate at the plate adding four more runs in the second and four more runs in the third to earn the victory.
Phoebe Worstell earned the win in the circle pitching all 5.0 innings with eight strikeouts.
In the second game of the day, Rose-Hulman found themselves in a battle with Concordia (MN). The Cobbers were able to build a 2-0 lead after picking up runs in the third and fourth innings.
Rose-Hulman had multiple opportunities with runners in scoring position but was unable to get a run across as they would suffer the shutout loss.
Audrey Theuring represented the Fightin' Engineers in the circle pitching all 7.0 innings with one strikeout.
Rose-Hulman will return to action on the road against Greenville University in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 22, at 1 PM and 3 PM.
