TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman baseball team welcomed Franklin College to campus for an HCAC doubleheader on Sunday. The team earned their second sweep of the weekend against HCAC opponents, defeating the Grizzlies in game one 19-15 and game two 8-5. This moves the Fightin' Engineers to 15-12 overall and 8-5 in the HCAC.
Both offenses were in full swing in the first game of the day.
Jackson Harms recorded his first home run of his college career with a grand slam in the first inning to make the score 5-1.
Rose-Hulman added two more runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 7-1. Franklin battled back to take the lead in the third inning with the score at 8-7.
The battle between both teams continued with Rose-Hulman jumping back in front with a strong fourth inning highlighted by a three-run homer by
Colton Brown to make the score 12-8.
The Grizzlies answered to regain the lead in the seventh with the score at 13-12. After two more lead changes, Franklin stood ahead 15-14 in the eighth inning.
The Fightin' Engineers took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth after a double by
Tyler Otroszko scored runs by
Peter Rogers and
Jonathan Oliger to put the team ahead 16-15.
Rose-Hulman added three more insurance runs to seal the win over Franklin in the first half of the doubleheader.
Connor O'Connell led the team at the plate, going 3-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Oliger earned the win on the mound, finishing the game with 2.0 innings pitched and one strikeout.
The second game was also a competitive contest. Franklin stood ahead 3-1 after three innings to take the early lead.
Rose-Hulman answered to jump in front in the fifth inning after a double by Rogers scored a run by
Joe Nevle, and O'Connell hit a two-run homer to make the score 4-3.
After the Grizzlies tied the game with a run in the sixth, Rose-Hulman jumped ahead for good, scoring four runs across the sixth and seventh innings to complete the sweep over Franklin.
O'Connell continued to dominate at the plate in game two, going 2-4 with two runs and two RBIs.
Alec Lewandowski earned the win on the mound, pitching 4.1 innings with four strikeouts.
Rose-Hulman will hit the road to battle Webster on Wednesday, April 16th, at 3 PM CT.
