HANOVER, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers softball team earned an HCAC sweep over Hanover on Wednesday with final scores of 8-4 and 12-6. This improves the team to 14-10 overall and 6-4 in the HCAC.
In the first game of the day, Hanover got on the board first with two runs to take the lead.
The Fightin' Engineers answered with three runs across the second and third innings to take the lead 3-2.
After Hanover tied the game at 3-3, Rose-Hulman exploded offensively in the eighth inning with five runs to secure the win.
Emily Hodges led the team, going 3-5 at the plate with one run scored.
Aubrey Smith pitched the complete game, earning the win, totaling 8.0 innings and five strikeouts.
Rose-Hulman continued to strive offensively in the second game of the day. The team jumped to a 5-0 lead to start the game across the first and second innings.
Hanover tried to get back in the game with three runs in the third inning to make the score 5-3. A double by Smith scored runs by
Lucille Pyrz and
Megan Newton to extend the Rose lead to 7-3.
Katelyn Sarvis tripled in the fifth inning to bring in runs by
Phoebe Worstell and Smith to increase the lead once again to 9-3.
The Panthers tried to put together a comeback, but
Jessica Newsom put the game out of reach with a three-run homer in the sixth to complete the sweep.
Newsom led the team at the plate, going 4-5 with two runs and three RBIs. Worstell earned the win in the circle with 4.1 innings pitched with three strikeouts.
The team will continue their conference schedule, hosting Manchester on Saturday, April 26, at 1 PM and 3 PM.
