TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team earned a split in their doubleheader against Manchester on Saturday. The team won the first game with a score of 6-2, and fell short in the second game 2-0. This moves the team to 15-11 overall this season and 7-5 in the HCAC.
Aubrey Smith got the team started in the first game with a solo home run to center field to give the Fightin' Engineers the early lead. A double by
Emily Hodges brought around a run by Kaitlyn Sarvis to make the lead 2-0 in the first inning.
Manchester answered with runs in the second and the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. The Fightin' Engineers jumped back in front with two more runs in the fourth inning by
Kayla Schnippel and
Gabriella Ezzell to make the score 4-2.
Phoebe Worstell put the game out of reach with a solo home run in the fifth inning to secure the win.
Smith earned the win in the circle, pitching a complete game with 7.0 innings pitched and one strikeout. Smith also led the team at the plate, going 2-4 with one run and two RBIs.
The Spartans avoided the sweep with a win in the second game of the doubleheader.
Manchester got on the board with two runs in the second inning to take the lead. Rose-Hulman went cold offensively, totaling only three hits in the contest.
Worstell suffered the loss in the circle, pitching a complete game with 7.0 innings pitched and seven strikeouts.
Rose-Hulman will continue their conference schedule, hosting Earlham on Sunday, April 27, at 1 PM and 3 PM.
