ANDERSON, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team split their mid-week doubleheader against Anderson with a loss in game one, 7-4, and a win in game two, 12-9. This advances the team to 17-13 overall and 9-7 in the HCAC.
Anderson got off to a strong start in the first game of the day after taking the lead in the second inning with a score of 1-0. Rose-Hulman exploded offensively in the top of the fourth to jump in front, scoring four runs by
Emily Hodges, Kayla Schippel,
Lucille Pyrz, and
Gabriella Ezzell.
The Ravens answered with a monster inning of their own, scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth to defeat the Fightin' Engineers.
Aubrey Smith led the team at the plate, going 2-3 with two RBIs. Smith suffered the loss in the circle, pitching 5.2 innings with five strikeouts.
Rose-Hulman bounced back to defeat Anderson in game two. The team got on the board first with a run by
Jessica Newsom in the first inning.
After two runs by the Ravens in the second, the Fightin' Engineers started to heat up at the plate. Four base-hits led to four runs to put Rose-Hulman ahead 5-2.
The lead changed multiple times down the stretch, with Anderson standing ahead 9-7 in the fifth inning. Rose-Hulman jumped in front for good, after four more runs in the sixth inning and an insurance run by Ezzell with a solo homer in the seventh.
Hodges led the team at the plate, going 3-4 with two runs and three RBIs.
Audrey Theuring earned the win in the circle pitching 1.2 innings. Smith picked up her second save of the season in the circle, finishing the last 2.0 innings.
The Fightin' Engineers will wrap up the regular season, hosting Mount St. Joseph for Senior Day on Friday, May 3, at 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM.
