TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers split their doubleheader against Mount St. Joseph on Senior Day Friday night. The team suffered a close loss in extra innings in the first game with a final score of 2-1, and picked up the win over the Lions in game two with a final of 2-1. This advances the team to 18-14 overall and 10-8 in the HCAC.
The team took the time before the game to honor their seniors,
Phoebe Worstell and
Hailey Hofmann, for their dedication to the Rose-Hulman softball program.
Both games of the doubleheader turned into pitching duels, with both defenses playing lights out. Rose-Hulman took the lead in game one after a single by Worstell scored a run by
Jessica Newsom.
Mount St. Joseph tied the game with a run in the fifth to send the game into extra innings. The Lions scored the go ahead run in the top of the eighth to take the lead.
Rose-Hulman was unable to answer and suffered the loss in the first game of the twin bill.
Aubrey Smith was incredible in the circle, pitching a complete game with 8.0 innings pitched and three strikeouts.
Rose-Hulman bounced back to defeat the Lions in the second game of the day. This is the first win for the Fightin' Engineers over the Lions since 2015, snapping a 17-game losing streak.
The game remained scoreless through five innings.
Kayla Schnippel was the hero of the night with a bases-clearing double in the sixth that scored runs by
Katelyn Sarvis and Smith to make the score 2-0.
MSJ answered with a run in the seventh, but the Fightin' Engineers were able to hold on to win the game and give the top-seeded Lions their second loss in conference play this season.
Worstell earned the win in the circle, pitching the complete game with 7.0 innings pitched and five strikeouts.
Rose-Hulman will look to see how the rest of the HCAC schedule plays out to find out if they have earned a bid to the HCAC Tournament for the first time since 2008.
