TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Fightin' Engineers were unable to make it two wins in a row, as the Ohio Northern Polar Bears pulled away with a 1-0 win.
The Polar Bears had a chance to take the lead in the 14
th minute, but their strike on goal was caught by senior keeper,
Brooke Spurlock. RHIT would respond less than three minutes later, as sophomore
Taylor Beede launched a shot on target from outside the box, which would also be saved.
Ohio Northern would later find themselves on a 2-on-1 fastbreak in the 27
th minute, where junior
Vianey Garcia's great defense resulted in her intercepting the pass down the middle, returning possession to RHIT. Spurlock added her second save on the day, a minute and a half later, with a great diving deflection to keep the game tied.
Rose-Hulman's aggressive offense would lead to them being awarded a corner kick near the end of the 31
st minute. Their cross was headed on target by freshman
Gaby Hansen, but goalkeeper Morgan Moeller deflected her shot away.
Spurlock would close out the half with a 39th-minute save, as the score remained 0-0. The Polar Bears outshot the Fightin' Engineers 7-3, while also attempting three corner kicks to Rose-Hulman's two.
The Polar Bears jumped into the lead in the 63
rd minute, on a goal from Emma Wingarter. Wingarter's goal was headed in off a high kick straight in the air, where her header deflected off the top post and into the net.
The Fightin' Engineers found themselves with an opportunity to tie the game in the 81
st, as Beede sailed a pass toward the front of the goal. Senior
Katie Choi headed her shot toward the net, where it just missed the left side of the goal.
The Polar Bears were able to escape with a 1-0 win at Rose-Hulman, finishing the match with 11 total shots to four.
Spurlock concluded the day with four saves, and she, alongside Beede, Garcia, and junior
Ally Smith, appeared in all 90 minutes of action.
Rose-Hulman will head to St. Louis, Mo., as they take on the WashU Bears on Sunday, September 7
