ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman football team traveled to face Trine on Saturday night. The team fell short to the Thunder with a final score of 27-10. This drops the Fightin' Engineers to 0-2 this season.
Jay Smith was the workhorse for the Fightin' Engineers, finishing the game with 30 carries and 107 yards rushing.
Bryce Chen was another standout offensively, leading the team with four catches for 85 yards receiving.
The Fightin' Engineers finished the game with three players in double figures in tackles.
Rudy Griffing led the team with 13, followed by
Wyatt Bell with 11, and
Antonio Barnes with 10.
After falling behind 24-0, the Rose-Hulman defense made a big play in the third quarter to keep the Fightin' Engineers in the game. A short pass was broken up by
Marshall Koch and intercepted by
Wyatt Bell. Bell returned the interception 60 yards to the endzone to put Rose-Hulman on the board.
The spark gave the Fightin' Engineers the momentum. The team then put together an 11-play, 70-yard drive, all the way down to the Trine five-yard line. Rose-Hulman was unable to punch in the touchdown and settled for the field goal by
Trevor Saguto to cut the Trine lead to 24-10.
In the fourth quarter, Rose-Hulman had a chance to cut the lead to one score. The team put together a 16-play, 71-yard drive, all the way down to the Trine 13-yard line. The Thunder defense was able to stop Rose-Hulman on fourth down to force a turnover on downs.
Trine would add another field goal to make the score 27-10 and put the game out of reach. The Thunder would ultimately defeat the Fightin' Engineers, handing them their second loss of the season.
Rose-Hulman football will look to bounce back on the road against Albion on Saturday, September 20, at 12 PM.
