GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Fightin' Engineers were unable to take down the Tigers, as DePauw defended their home field in a 1-0 win.
Senior
Brooke Spurlock made an immediate impact for Rose-Hulman, recording a fifth minute save on a shot down the middle.
The Fightin' Engineers responded with a 15
th minute strike on target from junior
Ally Smith, which was saved by Aubree Empie.
Spurlock would add her second save three minutes later, on a shot towards the right side of the goal to keep the game tied at zero.
In the 28
th minute, DePauw attempted a shot that ricocheted off the top right corner of the post. Two players on both sides would collide trying to receive the deflection, which resulted in Rose-Hulman committing a foul inside the box.
DePauw was awarded a penalty kick, and while Spurlock would dive the right way, Macy Happe's shot sailed just past her hand into the top right corner of the goal, giving DePauw the lead.
Rose-Hulman recorded the first shot of the second half, with sophomore
Sydnee Schuler's attempt going wide right in the 56
th. Junior
Emma Johns and senior
Katie Choi each added shots of their own, which came in the 61
st and 62
nd minutes.
Johns recorded RHIT's final shot on goal in the 74
th minute, which was also saved to conclude the 1-0 win for DePauw.
The Fightin' Engineers defense put together a great performance in the second half, where they did not allow a single shot on goal, while giving up just one corner kick.
Rose-Hulman will look to bounce back in their HCAC opener as they host Berea in the Grey Matters Awareness Game. The match will be held on Saturday, September 27 at 1 PM.
