Rose-Hulman Bashes Berea in HCAC Opener

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Fightin' Engineers recorded their highest scoring victory of the season, taking down the Berea Mountaineers by a score of 6-0.

Sydnee Schuler recorded Rose's first shot on goal of the contest, as she fired an 11th strike down the right side that was deflected on a diving save.

Brooke Spurlock would record her first save in the 18th minute, also making a diving save. Less than a minute later, Ally Smith attempted a cross towards the goal, which ricocheted off the top of the goal. Katie Choi recovered the deflection and headed her shot into the back of the net to give Rose-Hulman an early 1-0 lead.

Emma Johns extended RHIT's lead to two in the 32nd minute, firing a shot down the middle on an assist from Riley Heasley. The Fightin' Engineers would conclude the half with a 2-0 lead, outshooting the Mountaineers 5-2.

The Fightin' Engineers continued to dominate in the second half, as Jackie Weber scored her first collegiate goal in the 49th minute on a sliding kick with Schuler recording the assist. Schuler nearly added her second assist in the 61st minute, as her downfield pass connected with Alex Adams, but her shot was hit away on a diving one-handed save.

In the 74th minute of action, Lena Darini dribbled past Berea's defense and dumped off a pass to Lauren Marquardt. Marquardt attempted a shot from outside the left corner of the box, which sailed over Berea's keeper into the top right corner of the goal to put Rose-Hulman up 4-0.

The Fightin' Engineers continued to thrive offensively, as Elizabeth Becklund attempted an 82nd-minute shot, which was blocked by the defense. Mia Strelec recovered the deflection inside the box and recorded a shot down the middle, which beat the keeper to put the Fightin' Engineers up five.

Just a minute later, Rose-Hulman's aggressive attack awarded them their fifth corner kick of the match. Marquardt launched her kick towards the front of the goal, which was headed in by Makayla Doherty for the first goal of her collegiate career.

Doherty's goal sealed the 6-0 victory for Rose-Hulman, where the Fightin' Engineers outshot Berea 15-3, while attempting a total of nine shots on goal.

Rose-Hulman will look to improve to 2-0 in the conference in their road matchup against Hanover. The game will be held on Saturday, October 4, at 1 PM.
