TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Fightin' Engineers battled the Berea Mountaineers to a 1-1 tie in their first game of the HCAC season.
The Fightin' Engineers got off to a hot start as they had the majority of possession early in the game. In the 12
th minute,
Eli Miller beat Berea's defense and recorded a shot on goal that found the right side of the net to give Rose-Hulman an early lead.
Miller added another shot on goal in the 16
th minute, which was saved down the middle. Two minutes later,
Chase Kedzior fired a long ball strike on target, which was deflected away on a diving save in the left corner of the goal.
Rose-Hulman's defense thrived throughout the first half, allowing just one shot, which was off target, to help give RHIT a 1-0 lead after 45 minutes.
The Fightin' Engineers would nearly extend the lead to two in the 64
th minute, as
Alex Gilmore headed a shot off a corner kick that just sailed over the goal.
The Mountaineers had a great opportunity to score in the 79
th, where they had possession deep inside the box, and they shot on goal from point-blank range, which was hit away by
Justin Burns on a diving forward save.
Three minutes later, Berea was awarded a throw-in in Rose-Hulman's territory. Ombeni Shandera fielded the pass and dribbled down the Fightin' Engineers' goal line. He then made a pass towards the front of the goal, which was kicked in by Tobore Takpor to tie the game at one apiece.
Neither team would add a shot on goal in the final eight minutes of action, concluding the game in a 1-1 tie.
Rose-Hulman will take on the Hanover Panthers in Hanover, Ind., on Saturday, October 4 at 3:30 PM.
