Rose-Hulman Ties the Mountaineers in Conference Opener

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Fightin' Engineers battled the Berea Mountaineers to a 1-1 tie in their first game of the HCAC season.

The Fightin' Engineers got off to a hot start as they had the majority of possession early in the game. In the 12th minute, Eli Miller beat Berea's defense and recorded a shot on goal that found the right side of the net to give Rose-Hulman an early lead.

Miller added another shot on goal in the 16th minute, which was saved down the middle. Two minutes later, Chase Kedzior fired a long ball strike on target, which was deflected away on a diving save in the left corner of the goal.

Rose-Hulman's defense thrived throughout the first half, allowing just one shot, which was off target, to help give RHIT a 1-0 lead after 45 minutes.

The Fightin' Engineers would nearly extend the lead to two in the 64th minute, as Alex Gilmore headed a shot off a corner kick that just sailed over the goal.

The Mountaineers had a great opportunity to score in the 79th, where they had possession deep inside the box, and they shot on goal from point-blank range, which was hit away by Justin Burns on a diving forward save.

Three minutes later, Berea was awarded a throw-in in Rose-Hulman's territory. Ombeni Shandera fielded the pass and dribbled down the Fightin' Engineers' goal line. He then made a pass towards the front of the goal, which was kicked in by Tobore Takpor to tie the game at one apiece.

Neither team would add a shot on goal in the final eight minutes of action, concluding the game in a 1-1 tie.

Rose-Hulman will take on the Hanover Panthers in Hanover, Ind., on Saturday, October 4 at 3:30 PM.
