TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Rose-Hulman recorded their fourth victory over the past six games as the Fightin' Engineers took down the Mt. St. Joseph Lions by a score of 71-57.
The Fightin' Engineers jumped out to an early 8-7 lead, where they recorded four layups, which were all scored by different players.
Emma Schipp would knock down a three-pointer, and
Sophia Reese and
Julia Meyer each added two-point baskets to ignite a 9-0 Rose-Hulman run. Meyer would add a free throw at the end of the quarter, as RHIT concluded the period with an 18-11 lead.
Reese opened the second by swishing a three-pointer to extend the lead to double figures. One minute later,
María Godoy Rodriguez recorded a steal which led to a fast break layup, and Reese would add another three-pointer on the following possession.
Godoy Rodriguez continued to clamp up Mt. St. Joseph, as she recorded another two steals on consecutive possessions.
Katelyn Fennell would later add a pair of layups, and she recorded a steal that led to a fast break layup by Meyer. Two possessions later, Fennell blocked a shot at the rim, which resulted in Meyer scoring on a jumper in the paint to put Rose-Hulman up 34-17.
Kaia Peterson closed out the half by converting a pair of free throws, which gave the Fightin' Engineers a 38-20 lead.
Rose-Hulman put together one of their best halves of the season, as the team hauled in 17 rebounds, with seven coming on the offensive end. The Fightin' Engineers would also force 15 turnovers, which they would capitalize on by scoring 17 points off turnovers. The team added ten steals, five of which came from Godoy Rodriguez.
Emma Schipp converted her second three-pointer of the game to start the third. Reese followed that up with a mid-range bucket, and she added a pair of free throws halfway through the quarter, which extended the lead to 45-22.
Godoy Rodriguez added another two steals, which came in a 30-second span, and she assisted on Reese's three-pointer to put RHIT up by 24. The Fightin' Engineers would continue to thrive at the line as Reese and Fennell scored a pair of free throws late in the third, where Rose-Hulman concluded the quarter with a 54-31 lead.
The Lions would score a three-pointer midway through the fourth, which helped cut the lead to 17. They were able to score on four straight possessions, but
Anaya Hawkins would also score with a basket in the paint to keep the lead at 58-44.
Shortly afterwards, Fennell hauled in an offensive rebound, and she fought through contact to score an and-one layup. One possession later, Reese hit her opponent with a jab-step crossover, and she drove down the lane to score a layup for her 21st point of the game.
Reagan Lorenzen would ice the game by scoring on a free throw as Rose-Hulman defeated the #3-seed in the conference by a score of 71-57.
Sophia Reese scored a career-high 21 points, while adding two assists and three steals. She shot 7-10 from the floor, while converting a perfect 3-3 from three-point range and 4-4 at the free throw line.
Katelyn Fennell put up 15 points, and she recorded team-highs with nine rebounds and three assists, while adding two steals. She shot 5-9 from the field, and a perfect 5-5 at the charity stripe.
Emma Schipp recorded ten points with three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. She shot 4-9 from the field and 2-3 from beyond the arc.
Julia Meyer recorded ten points with four rebounds on 4-9 shooting from the floor.
María Godoy Rodriguez accumulated seven steals, which ranks as the second most in a game in school history. She added four points, four rebounds, and two assists, while shooting 2-4 from the field. Godoy Rodriguez has now recorded six or more steals in three of the past five games this season.
The Fightin' Engineers concluded the game by shooting 55.6% (5-9) from three-point range, and they recorded 17 steals as a team, which resulted in 24 points off turnovers.
Rose-Hulman will look to make it two wins in a row as they face Transylvania on the road. The match will tip off on Saturday, January 10, at 1 PM.
