CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The Rose-Hulman men's basketball team suffered a road loss to Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday night with a final score of 62-58. This drops the team to 8-5 overall and 5-1 in the HCAC this season.
Nate Smith led the Fightin' Engineers with 16 points in the contest.
Evan Gentile was also able to reach double figures in scoring with 11 points on the night.
Christian Torres was close to a double-double, finishing the game with nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Lions came out fast, jumping to an early lead. Mount St. Joseph stretched their lead to 13 points on a made three-pointer right before the end of the first half. The Fightin' Engineers trailed 30-17 at the halftime break.
MSJ maintained their lead for a majority of the second half. Rose-Hulman chipped away to decrease the deficit to just five points on a made layup by Smith with 2:53 remaining in the game, with the score at 56-51. After both teams traded free throws, Rose-Hulman trailed 59-53 with 2:14 remaining in the game.
Jackson Kochalka drained a corner three to keep the Fightin' Engineers' hopes alive, making the score 59-56 with 20 seconds left. Mount St. Joseph was able to finish the game at the free throw line to hand Rose-Hulman thier first conference loss of the season.
Rose-Hulman will continue conference play, traveling to take on Transylvania on Saturday, January 10, at 3 PM.
