TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman men's basketball team earned a crucial win over Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday with a final score of 64-60. This advances the team to 14-9 overall and 11-5 in the HCAC.
Cole Pride led the team in scoring with 17 points on the night. Other double-figure scorers included
Evan Gentile with 13 and
Joey Schmitz with 10.
Jack Jenniges also made an impact with a team-high seven rebounds and four assists.
The game started off close with both teams trading buckets. The score stood tied 11-11 with 13:20 remaining in the first half. Rose-Hulman put together a 14-5 run, finished off with a made three-pointer by Gentile and a steal by the freshman that led to a fast break layup. This put the Fightin' Engineers up 25-16 with 7:16 left before halftime.
Mount St. Joseph battled back with an 11-2 run to tie the score at 27-27 heading into the halftime break.
In the second half, Rose-Hulman was quick to rebuild their lead. After being tied 33-33, the Fightin' Engineers went on a 15-4 run to take their largest lead of the night after a made layup by
Will McElheney, which made the score 48-37.
MSJ chipped away at the Rose-Hulman lead to cut the deficit down to one point with the score at 55-54 with 3:44 remaining in the game. That would be as close as the Lions would get, as Rose-Hulman scored on a made layup by Pride and a made three-pointer by Gentile to stretch the Rose lead back to two possessions.
Rose-Hulman would hold on, with Jenniges hitting the final free throws to seal the win and defeat the Lions.
The win moves the Fightin' Engineers into a tie for third place in the HCAC with MSJ. Rose-Hulman stands only one game behind first place. Anderson and Transylvania are in a tie for first with conference records of 12-4.
Rose-Hulman will hit the road to take on Bluffton this Saturday, February 14, at 1 PM. The team will finish the regular season next Wednesday, February 17, against Earlham on the road at 7:30 PM.
