Rose-Hulman Takes Down Earlham; Clinches #6-Seed in HCAC Tournament

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Fightin' Engineers wrapped up the regular season with a 70-67 win over the Earlham Quakers.
 
The Fightin' Engineers opened the game shooting lights out as they knocked down their first three three-pointers of the game. Fennell knocked down a three to give RHIT an early five-point lead, and both she and Reese would hit back-to-back threes to make it a 15-8 game.
 
Julia Meyer added an and-one basket in the paint, and the Quakers responded with a three-pointer on the next possession. María Godoy Rodriguez recorded a steal at half court, which she took coast-to-coast for a layup, and a pair of Kaia Peterson free throws concluded the first with a score of 24-20.
 
The Quakers led off the second quarter by scoring on a three-point shot. Fennell answered with a two-point jumper, and a layup from Peterson kept Rose-Hulman in the lead by five. Both teams would trade free throws, and Peterson would score on a coast-to-coast layup to stretch the lead to seven.
 
Meyer would swish a three-pointer with nine seconds in the half, as Rose-Hulman was able to conclude the period up 41-34.
 
The Fightin' Engineers extended their lead to double digits, as Fennell recorded back-to-back steals, resulting in open layups by her and Godoy Rodriguez.
 
Halfway through the third, both the Quakers and the Fightin' Engineers were able to score on three straight possessions. Godoy Rodriguez added a pair of two-pointers, while Reese scored on a jump shot in the paint.
 
Peterson continued to thrive at the hoop, as she recorded two more layups late in the third quarter. Columba Rodriguez Real added a turnaround jumper right before the half, as RHIT entered the fourth with a 59-52 lead.
 
Rose-Hulman knocked down four free throws to open their fourth quarter scoring, but Earlham was able to cut the lead to 60-63, following three straight two-pointers. Reese would later add a crossover jumper, which led to her cashing an open shot.
 
Earlham would continue to stay in the game, as they shot 3-4 from the line to make it a 66-65 game. With 43 seconds remaining, Fennell scored a layup, but Earlham would answer with a layup of their own at the 14-second mark.
 
Peterson would draw a foul, and she knocked down a free throw to stretch Rose-Hulman's lead to two. Peterson would then steal the inbounds pass, which clinched the 70-67 victory.
 
The Fightin' Engineers will enter the HCAC Tournament having won four of their past five games.
 
Katelyn Fennell put up a team-high 19 points, shooting 7-18 from the floor, 2-5 from three, and 3-4 from the free throw line. She hauled in four rebounds, while adding two assists and two steals.
 
Sophia Reese scored 14 points, shooting 4-8 from the field and 5-6 at the free throw line. She dished out a team-best six assists while blocking one shot.
 
Kaia Peterson recorded a double-double with 13 points and a team-high ten boards. She shot 5-13 from the floor, while recording two steals and one block.
 
María Godoy Rodriguez recorded her season-high for the second consecutive game. She dropped 12 points on 6-17 shooting with six rebounds and three assists. She also led Rose-Hulman's defensive efforts, accumulating four steals and three blocks.
 
With the victory, Rose-Hulman has clinched the #6-seed in the HCAC Tournament. They will face the Anderson Ravens on the road in the HCAC Quarterfinals on Saturday, February 21, at 1 PM.
