Rose-Hulman Ends #6 WashU's Undefeated Season in 9-8 Thriller

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Washington St. Louis' perfect season has come to an end as Rose-Hulman has taken down the #6 Bears in a triumphant 9-8 victory!

Early in the second, sophomore TJ Pipkins reached on a fielder's choice, and senior Mason Rasmussen and sophomore Sam Erickson each hit singles to the outfield. With the bases loaded, freshman Matthew Furtado launched a grand slam over the right field wall as Rose-Hulman took an early 4-0 lead.

The Fightin' Engineers would extend the lead to five in the third, as Pipkins hit a stand-up double to right field, bringing sophomore Jackson Harms home. Erickson would add a double of his own to right center field, with Pipkins scoring on the play. With one out, sophomore Noah Rasmussen smacked a sacrifice fly to deep left field as Erickson's run stretched the lead to seven.

Sophomore Liam Richardson would record one strikeout in each of the first three innings, and he forced three quick fly outs at the top of the fourth.

With two outs and no one on in the fourth inning, Harms doubled to center field, where he slid into second to beat the throw. Pipkins would add a single, putting runners on the corners for the Fightin' Engineers. M. Rasmussen would then hit an RBI single on a line drive to left center field as Harms scored another run. With the bases loaded, Furtado would be walked, as Pipkins scored Rose-Hulman's ninth run of the game.

The Bears would get on the board atop the fifth inning, as they took advantage of a Rose-Hulman error to score two runs. They would add a double at the top of the sixth, before scoring their third run on an RBI single to left field.

Washington-St. Louis continued to find success throughout the sixth, as they were able to load the bases, before hitting a grand slam of their own to cut the lead to 9-7. Momentum would stay on their side, as they cut the lead to one atop the eighth inning, following a sacrifice fly.

At the top of the eighth inning, freshman Jack Reeves forced a groundout, and he followed that up by striking out consecutive batters to wrap up the inning. He added another strikeout to begin the ninth, before forcing a pop-up to second base.

With Rose-Hulman one out away from securing the upset, Will Taigen hit a line drive to deep right field. Pipkins would chase down the hit, and he made a sensational diving catch as Rose-Hulman achieved the thrilling 9-8 victory.
