TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team dropped both games of their doubleheader against Greenville with final scores of 11-9 and 13-3. The losses drop the team to 5-7 overall this season.
The Fightin' Engineers started off strong in the first game of the day.
Aubrey Smith got the team on the board first with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first.
Rose added another run after a single by
Jessica Newsom brought in a score by
Katelyn Sarvis to stand ahead 3-0. Smith hit the ball over the fence again in her next at-bat. This time it was a three-run shot, bringing in two teammates to extend the Rose-Hulman lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the second.
The Panthers battled back, scoring 11 unanswered runs across the third to the seventh innings to take a commanding 11-6 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
Rose-Hulman scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but came up short to suffer the loss, 11-9.
Smith suffered the loss in the circle in game one, pitching 3.2 innings with four strikeouts.
Emily Hodges was the standout at the plate, finishing 3-5 with three runs scored and one RBI.
Kayla Schnippel also finished 3-5 on the day with one RBI. Smith was the other standout at the plate, finishing 2-4 with two runs scored and six RBIs.
Greenville carried their momentum into the second game of the day. The Panthers jumped to an 8-0 lead after four innings to take a commanding lead.
The Fightin' Engineers answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth from Newsom, Smith, and
Marlee Walleen to make the score 8-3.
The Panthers strung together five more runs in the fifth to defeat the Fightin' Engineers 13-3 after five innings.
Audrey Theuring suffered the loss in the circle with 3.0 innings pitched and two strikeouts.
The Fightin' Engineers softball team will hit the road to begin HCAC play, facing Manchester on Saturday, March 28, at 1 pm and 3 PM.
