Rose-Hulman Softball Splits HCAC Opener Against Manchester

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team split their doubleheader against Manchester to open HCAC play. The team won the first game, 10-1 after five innings, and fell in the second game, 7-5. This advances the team to 6-8 overall and 1-1 in the HCAC. 

In the first game of the day, Rose-Hulman exploded offensively to earn a dominant win.

The team scored three runs in the top of the second inning by Katelyn Sarvis, Rosie Travioli, and Kyra Tucker. The Fightin' Engineers added three more runs in the top of the third by Sarvis, Travioli, and Tucker to stand ahead 6-0. 

Rose-Hulman remained hot at the plate with Jessica Newsom hitting a solo homer in the top of the fifth to extend the score to 7-0. Rose put up three more runs in the fifth to secure the run rule after five innings. 

Aubrey Smith earned the win in the circle with 5.0 innings pitched and one strikeout. Sarvis was the standout at the plate, finishing the day going 2-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Tucker also had an impressive day, going perfect at the plate at 2-2 with two runs scored and two RBIs. 

In game two, Manchester was able to defeat the Fightin' Engineers in a close game. 

The Spartans jumped to a 2-0 lead after scoring two runs in the second inning. Rose-Hulman got on the board after a sacrifice fly by Smith brought in a run by Lucille Pyrz

Rose-Hulman took the lead after a double by Pyrz scored runs by Sarvis and Shearer in the top of the sixth inning, making the score 3-2. The Fightin' Engineers added another run after a sacrifice fly by Emily Hodges brought home Travioli to make the score 4-2. 

Manchester answered to retake the lead with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 7-4. Rose-Hulman had a chance in the top of the seventh, but could only get one run across and would suffer the loss to the Spartans, 7-5. 

Smith suffered the loss in the circle. Pyrz led the team at the plate in game two, going a perfect 3-3 with one run scored and two RBIs. Smith was another standout at the plate, finishing 2-3 with one run and one RBI. 

Rose-Hulman will return home to host the Webster Gorloks on Sunday, March 29, at 1 PM and 3 PM.
