ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team picked up two huge victories on the road against Principia. The team earned the sweep with final scores of 14-1 in game one and 17-0 in game two. This advances the team to 10-12 overall this season.
Rose-Hulman got off to a hot start in the first game of the day. The team put up five runs to jump to a commanding lead in the first inning.
Jessica Newsom scored the first run after
Kayla Schnippel reached on an error by the Panthers. A single by
Katelyn Sarvis scored another run by
Aubrey Smith. Schnippel was able to get around after another error by the Panthers to make the score 3-0.
Then singles by
Rosie Travioli and
Lucille Pyrz brought in runs by
Abigale Shearer and Sarvis to solidify the 5-0 lead.
The Fightin' Engineers continued to thrive offensively, putting up nine more runs to defeat the Panthers after five innings.
Sarvis led the team at the plate, going 2-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Newsom was another standout hitter, going a perfect 2-2 with three runs scored.
Emily Hodges earned the win in the circle in her first pitching appearance of the season with 3.0 innings pitched and one strikeout. Smith had a quality start, going 2.0 innings with two strikeouts.
Rose-Hulman kept their momentum going into the second game of the day.
The team started the second game scoring seven runs in the first inning. Pyrz scored on a wild pitch to start the game. Then a single by Sarvis brought in a run by Smith.
Jadyn Winkler forced a walk with the bases loaded to bring in a run by Schnippel. Then hits by Travioli and Pyrz brought in runs by Sarvis, Shearer, Travioli, and Winkler to build a 7-0 advantage.
The Fightin' Engineers continued to dominate, adding five more runs in the top of the second to build an impressive 12-0 lead. Rose-Hulman would hang on to defeat the Panthers with a final score of 17-0 after five innings to complete the sweep.
Pyrz led the team at the plate in game two, finishing a perfect 2-2 at the dish with one run scored and five RBIs. Sarvis had another big game, going 2-3 with three runs and two RBIs.
Megan Newton earned the win in her first pitching appearance of the season, pitching 4.0 innings with three strikeouts.
The Fightin' Engineers will return home to host Franklin College in an HCAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 15, at 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM.
