Softball Falls to Monmouth on Senior Day

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman softball team suffered two losses on Sunday in their doubleheader against Monmouth. The team dropped game one with a score of 13-5, and fell short in game two with a score of 5-4. The two losses drop the team to 11-17 overall this season. 

Monmouth got on the board first in game one of the day. Rose-Hulman answered with two runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Jadyn Winkler hit her first home run of the season out to centerfield to get Rose on the board. Lucille Pyrz then reached on a fielder's choice, bringing in a run by Katelyn Sarvis.

Monmouth jumped back in front after two more scores in the top of the third inning. The Fighting Scots added five more runs across the fifth and sixth innings to stand ahead 8-2.

Sarvis celebrated her Senior Day with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth that cut the deficit to 8-3. 

Monmouth would rattle off five more runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach, defeating Rose-Hulman with a final score of 13-5. 

Aubrey Smith suffered the loss in the circle, pitching 5.0 innings with one strikeout. Sarvis was the standout at the plate, finishing 3-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Winkler was another impressive hitter, going 2-3 with one run and two RBIs. 

Rose-Hulman put up a fight in the second game of the day. Monmouth started strong, jumping to a 4-1 lead after the second inning. After a Monmouth score in the top of the sixth, Smith hit a solo homer to cut the deficit to 5-2.

Entering the bottom of the seventh, Rose-Hulman started a comeback. A single by Jessica Newsom brought in a run by Megan Newton to make the score 5-3. Smith doubled to score another run by Pyrz to cut the lead to 5-4. The Fightin' Engineers' comeback was cut short by the Scots, as they would drop the second game of the double header to suffer the sweep. 

Audrey Theuring represented the Fightin' Engineers in the circle, finishing the game with 7.0 innings pitched. Smith was the standout in game two at the plate, going 3-4 with one run and two RBIs. Newsome was another impactful hitter, finishing 2-4 with one run and one RBI. 

Rose-Hulman will return to the diamond tomorrow to host Transylvania on Monday, April 20, at 3:30 PM and 5:30 PM.
