TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Rose-Hulman achieved two crucial victories over Anderson by scores of 12-2 and 7-5. With the pair of victories, the Fightin' Engineers have improved to the #3-seed in the HCAC with a conference record of 11-7.
Game One
Anderson took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, as they recorded a double to left center before scoring on an infield ground out.
Issei Takahashi recorded the Fightin' Engineers' first hit on a single to left center, before
TJ Pipkins added a double on a line drive out to left center field as well.
With a runner on second in the top of the second inning,
Michael Hines made a sensational diving catch on a hard line drive, where he forced a double play at second to close out the inning. The Ravens would later extend their lead to 2-0 in the top of the third, as they hit a double to right center field, and an RBI single through the right side.
Pipkins would be walked in the bottom of the third, and
Mason Rasmussen singled on a grounder through the left side. With two outs,
Jackson Harms launched the very first pitch of his at bat over the left field wall for a three-run homer. Harms' three-run shot gave Rose-Hulman a 3-2 lead, and he now ranks fifth in the HCAC with seven home runs.
With a runner in scoring position,
Liam Richardson struck out back-to-back batters who went down swinging to close out the top of the fourth.
Sam Erickson would record a double on a line drive to right-center field in the bottom of the fourth. He would advance to third on a single from
Jackson Summers, before scoring on a fielding error. With two outs, Summers and Takahashi each stole a base, and Summers was able to round third and score, following a throwing error. M. Rasmussen would then hit an RBI double off the left center field wall, resulting in a Takahashi run.
Connor O'Connell would bring M. Rasmussen home on a single to right field, extending Rose-Hulman's lead to 7-2.
Richardson led off the fifth by striking out two more batters, giving him four strikeouts in a row.
Michael Hines recorded a double to left field to open the bottom of the fifth, and he would later score on a wild pitch. Summers would hit a near home run during the same at bat, as his stand up double bounced off the top of the center field wall, to bring Erickson home. Summers would close out the inning by scoring on a Pipkins single to center field to make it a 10-2 game.
Richardson's dominance on the mound continued as he struck out back-to-back batters to close out the top of the sixth. He added another two strikeouts to open the seventh inning, giving him four straight strikeouts for the second time today. Across his seven innings pitched, Richardson recorded a career-high nine strikeouts, while giving up just one earned run.
Rose-Hulman loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, as Takahashi, Pipkins, and M. Rasmussen each singled on grounders through the infield. Takahashi was able to score on a wild pitch, before O'Connell would be intentionally walked, which loaded the bases. Hines would close out the game with an RBI sacrifice fly to deep right field, where Pipkins' run secured the mercy rule win by a score of 12-2.
Game Two
The Ravens opened game two with a three-run first inning, where they recorded three hits, and RBIs on a ground out, a double to left center, and a single up the middle. Summers led off the bottom of the first with a single to left center, and Takahashi would be walked. With two out, O'Connell recorded a two-RBI single on a shallow pop-up to center field, cutting the lead to one.
Anderson began the third with a walk, and they put two runners on due to a single through the left side. The Ravens would extend their lead to two on a single to center field, before a sacrifice fly to center field gave them a 5-2 lead.
Summers made it to first on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning, and he advanced to second following a groundout. Pipkins would then record an RBI single through the left side, as Summers was able to beat the throw home to cut the lead to 5-3.
Gavin Drooger forced three straight outs in the top of the sixth, and he would add a strikeout to close out the seventh inning, while there were runners on second and third.
With Rose-Hulman still down by two, Pipkins and M. Rasmussen recorded back-to-back singles in the bottom of the eighth inning. They would both advance to second and third, as O'Connell was able to reach first on a fielding error. With the bases loaded, Hines came through in the clutch once again, as he smacked a double to deep left field, where he recorded three RBIs to put Rose-Hulman ahead 6-5.
Noah Ramussen would advance Hines to third as he hit a line drive single to center field. During the next at-bat, Erickson laid down a perfect bunt, where Hines was able to dive into home to give the Fightin' Engineers a 7-5 lead.
Drooger forced a fly out in the top of the ninth, before he struck out the next batter swinging. With a runner on first, Drooger recorded his sixth strikeout of the game for the final out, capping off Rose-Hulman's 7-5 comeback victory.
The Fightin' Engineers will be seeking their sixth consecutive victory as they match up with Anderson tomorrow, Sunday, April 26, at 1 PM.
