TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Fightin' Engineers improved to 4-1 on the season as they defeated the Spalding Golden Eagles in a thrilling 1-0 game.
Senior
Ally Smith was looking to score early in the match as she fired two deep shots on goal which were saved in the 17th and 26th minutes.
Sophomore
Alicia Gonzalez would make two saves in the first half, highlighted by a catching save in the 25th minute.
Just one minute into the second half, sophomore
Elizabeth Becklund flicked the ball over her defender's head, where she drove downfield. Becklund made a great pass towards the goal to freshman
Delaney Untermeyer, whose shot was deflected by the defense.
Junior
Taylor Beede nearly put Rose-Hulman ahead in the 54th minute, as she launched a shot from long range which just sailed over the goal.
Five minutes later, freshman
Jenna Dudley attempted a shot that deflected off the inside of the post. Senior
Meagan Hall recovered the deflection, where she kicked in the opening goal for the Fightin' Engineers.
The Golden Eagles were awarded a free kick from right outside the box in the 67th minute. They fired a shot down the left side, which would be saved by Gonzalez.
Dudley nearly put Rose-Hulman up by two, as her shot on goal off a cross from junior
Iliana Hernandez was saved. Spalding would have one final chance to tie the game with a shot on goal in the final minute, but Gonzalez hauled in her fourth save of the game to secure the 1-0 win.
The Fightin' Engineers will conclude their homestand against DePauw on Wednesday, September 23 at 7 PM.
