TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Fightin' Engineers came up shy in a very evenly matched game with the Wilmington Quakers by a score of 1-0.
Just a day after being named the HCAC Defensive Player of the Week,
Justin Burns made an immediate impact by deflecting away a shot from point blank range five minutes into the match.
Five minutes later,
Benjamin Murphy fought off his defender where he was able to drive downfield. He made a cross to
Joshua Echegoyen, whose shot on goal was hit away on an amazing save from Wilmington's keeper.
Burns would add a one handed diving save in the 27th minute, off a header from the Quakers. Two minutes later, Echegoyen crossed a pass from the left side to
Benjamin Murphy. Murphy's shot rolled past the keeper, but Wilmington's defender would record a team save right at the goal line.
The Quakers concluded the half with a 1-0 lead, where they outshot Rose-Hulman 6-5.
Echegoyen would add his second shot on goal in the 50th minute, where he was denied on a diving save. Wilmington was awarded a corner kick ten minutes later, where their header was hauled in by Burns for his third save of the game.
The Fightin' Engineers found themselves on the attack once again in the 76th minute.
Oliver Fila received a pass from the left side of the box, and he fired a strike towards the goal which was hit away on a diving save.
Rose-Hulman would add three more shots in the final ten minutes, but they were unable to find the back of the net as the Quakers snuck by with a 1-0 win. The Fightin' Engineers would outshoot Wilmington 11-10, and they would also surpass the Quakers 5-3 in corner kicks.
Rose-Hulman will face their first HCAC opponent on the season as they go up against Berea on the road. The match will be held on Saturday, September 26 at 3:30 PM.
