TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The Rose-Hulman women's volleyball team hosted a tri-match for their Cancer Research Weekend. The Fightin' Engineers fell to Illinois Tech in their first match with a final score of 3-0 and bounced back to defeat Trine in a five-set match with a final score of 3-2. The team now stands at 3-10 overall this season.
In the first match of the day, Rose-Hulman fell to IIT with set scores of 25-18, 28-26, and 25-19.
Greta Carlson led the team with 10 kills,
Julia Irmen had a team-high 24 assists, and
Shae Clements led the defense with 15 digs.
The Fightin' Engineers bounced back to win their second match of the day against Trine in a five-set battle with set scores of 25-23, 11-25, 10-25, 25-21, and 16-14.
Hannah Bergfeld led the team with 10 kills, Irmen was the star setter with a team-high 35 assists, and Clements was the standout on defense with 24 digs.
The Fightin' Engineers won the first set against the Thunder in a close contest. After being ahead 22-18, Trine closed the deficit with a 5-2 run to shrink the Rose lead to 24-23. The Fightin' Engineers closed out the win with a kill by
Heidi Fay to take the first set.
After suffering some tough losses in the second and third sets, Rose-Hulman found their rhythm in the fourth. After trailing 20-19, Rose put together an exceptional 6-1 run to close out the set on a kill by
Kaia Schroeder and force the fifth-set tiebreaker.
The fifth set came down to the wire with both teams trading the lead. With the score tied at 14-14, Trine made a costly attack error that gave Rose-Hulman the advantage 15-14.
Emi Fisher sealed the win for the Fightin' Engineers with a service ace to defeat the Thunder.
Rose-Hulman will return to Hulbert Arena on Saturday, October 3, to open conference play against Mount St. Joseph University at 11 AM on Homecoming Weekend.
