TERRE HAUTE, IND. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology defeated Ohio Wesleyan University in three sets after falling to Webster University in four sets to open the 2013 Fightin' Engineer Volleyball Invitational on Saturday.
Rose-Hulman swept Ohio Wesleyan 25-18, 25-15, 25-22 to complete the day at Hulbert Arena. Sophomore Sarah Jensen (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley Northwest) led the attack with 13 kills and 19 assists.
Senior Catherine Fiutem (Harrison, Ohio/Oldenburg Academy) and sophomore Anna Weber (Schererville/Lake Central) pitched in with seven kills each. Freshman Morgan Dreyer (Batesville) also added 17 assists.
Defensively, senior Kate Dangel (Upper Arlington, Ohio) had a team-high 16 digs, with sophomore Kali Nordquist (Cape Coral, Fla./Ida Baker) adding 11. Freshman Katelyn Race (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) led the blocking effort with three assists.
Webster rallied to capture a 25-27, 25-14, 25-20, 25-17 win over Rose-Hulman in the opener. Jensen smashed a team-high 13 kills, with Fiutem adding 10. Dreyer (22) and Jensen (12) also reached double figures in assists. Dangel had 26 digs and two service aces, and Fiutem also contributed a team-high four blocks.
Rose-Hulman stands 3-6 on the season and returns to action with two matches on Sunday. The Fightin' Engineers face Muskingum in the opener at 10 a.m., then battle Kenyon at 2 p.m.
