TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology returns to the gridiron with a trip to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Defiance College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The Fightin' Engineers look to bounce back from a 31-17 loss to Bluffton University last weekend after four straight wins to start the season. Rose-Hulman has also earned its first votes in a national football poll since 1987 this fall.
Sophomore Austin Swenson leads NCAA Division III in passing yards per game (413.4) and second in total offense (428.4). He also ranks No. 2 nationally in points responsible for per game (26.8) and is third in completions per game (33.6). Sophomore Alec Fisher also stands No. 2 nationally in receiving touchdowns with 10.
Defensively, sophomore Kevin Nowak leads the Engineers and ranks No. 11 nationally in pass defensed at 2.0 per game. Junior Chris Sander paces the squad with 46 tackles, followed by Nowak at 36 and freshman Kaelen Garner at 26.
Special teams wise, junior Craig Larew leads the team with 26-28 on extra points, 4-6 on field goals and a 36.9 yard average on 18 punts.
Offensively, Rose-Hulman leads the HCAC in scoring offense at 46.0 points per game, including four games of 40 or more points.
Defiance (1-4, 1-2 HCAC) boasts one of the top defenses in the HCAC, ranking first in rushing yards allowed (110.2) and second in total yards allowed (374.6). Andrew Feldhaus leads the defense with 46 tackles, three interceptions and seven pass deflections. Garrett Teague paces the passing performance with 523 yards and three touchdowns.
After this week's action, Rose-Hulman travels to Franklin College for a matchup against the defending conference champions on Oct. 25.
