TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology returns to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball action in a matchup with Transylvania University on Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Fightin' Engineers and Pioneers have combined for five NCAA Division III Tournament appearances in the last three seasons, with Rose-Hulman winning three consecutive HCAC Tournament titles. Both teams look to rebound from slow starts against tough schedules, with Rose-Hulman at 1-4 overall and Transylvania at 0-4.
Senior Corey Povaleri leads the Rose-Hulman scoring attack with an average of 13.0 points per game. Junior Tyler Duffy is coming off a career-high 18-point effort against Anderson that bolstered his season scoring average to 10.2 points per game.
Other probable starters for Rose-Hulman include junior Jimmy Miller (8.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg); junior Matt Loesing (9.2 ppg, 7.0 rpg); and sophomore Wade Stallings (5.0 ppg, 2.8 rpg).
Rose-Hulman picked up a victory over Wabash last Sunday and most recently fell 68-62 to Anderson in the conference opener.
Transylvania narrowly fell to one of the top teams in the HCAC preseason poll with a narrow 73-68 loss at Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday. The early season schedule also featured matchups with NCAA Division I Lipscomb and two traditional NCAA Division III Tournament contenders in Centre and Spalding.
Sophomore guard Alex Jones leads the Pioneers in scoring at 14.3 points per game, as three Transylvania guards all average double figures in scoring. Freshman Sam Sergeant (13.0 ppg) and freshman Jake Williams (11.0 ppg) are joined in the projected starting lineup by forwards Parker Stansberry (9.7 ppg) and Robert Dence (6.5 ppg).
Transylvania leads the all-time series with Rose-Hulman 16-6, including a 14-5 margin in HCAC play. Rose-Hulman won the most recent meeting in Hulbert Arena in January. After Saturday's game, the Fightin' Engineers host Millikin University in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday.
