TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Mount St. Joseph University meet in a matchup at the top of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball standings on Saturday in Cincinnati.
Mount St. Joseph holds a one-game lead in the HCAC standings over Rose-Hulman. The Lions stand 10-3 on the season after falling at Anderson on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Rose-Hulman has won five consecutive games to move to 9-4 on the HCAC season and close within one game of first place.
Rose-Hulman features five players averaging double figures in scoring, led by senior Dillon Reynolds at 12.0 points per game. Senior Matt Loesing adds 11.9 points per contest, with senior Tyler Duffy adding 10.5. Senior Jimmy Miller pitches in with 10.3 points per game, and sophomore Stephen Schueth rounds out the starting lineup with an average of 6.8 points per contest.
Freshman Charlie Aimone rounds out the Fightin' Engineer double figure scorers at 10.5 points per game. Other key reserves include junior Collin Wojcik (6.7 ppg), freshman Luke Callahan (6.2 ppg), junior Wade Stallings (3.3 ppg) and senior Mitch Williams (2.2 ppg).
Mount St. Joseph had a slow start but has rattled off nine wins in its last 11 games to take first place in the HCAC standings. Anderson topped the Lions in their most recent game to snap a 9-1 stretch that included wins over Bluffton, Defiance, Earlham and Transylvania.
Joel Scudder leads the Lions in scoring at 17.3 points per game. The balanced Lions scoring attack features five players in double figures and a 40% three-point shooting clip for the team.
The all-time series is tied at 10-10 and began when Rose-Hulman joined the HCAC in 2006-07. The Lions won the most recent meeting by a 90-73 count in overtime at Hulbert Arena.
After Saturday's game, Rose-Hulman returns to action at home with the John Mutchner Cup Game on Feb. 10 against Earlham College. The Cup is named for the former Rose-Hulman men's basketball coach and athletic director who was also a standout student-athlete at Earlham. Mutchner is a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame at both institutions.
