Men's Track & Field Wins 10th Straight HCAC Indoor Title

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology captured its 10th consecutive Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Indoor Track and Field championship, and the women came home 2nd with a strong performance at the Sports and Recreation Center on Saturday.

Rose-Hulman won the men's team championship with 204 points, outdistancing second-place Earlham with 108 points.  Hanover was third with 92 points, followed by Manchester, Bluffton, Mount St. Joseph, Franklin, Anderson, Defiance and Transylvania in the team scoring.

The men's team title marks Rose-Hulman's 22nd consecutive HCAC men's track and field championship -- 10 indoors and 12 outdoors.

On the women's side, Hanover brought home first-place honors with 148.5 points.  Rose-Hulman scored 125.5 points for a strong second-place finish.  Manchester was third at 113, followed by Bluffton, Mount St. Joseph, Earlham, Anderson, Franklin, Defiance and Transylvania.

Rose-Hulman captured two event Most Valuable Athlete awards and Larry Cole was named HCAC Men's Coach of the Year to lead the championship performance.  Matthew Stevenot was named the Men's Track Most Valuable Athlete after completing the double of winning the mile (4:24.43) and the 3000-meter run (8:53.54).  Nathan Schrader captured Men's Field Most Valuable Athlete honors after sweeping the weight throw (57' 8 1/2") and shot put (50' 4") championships.

For Cole, the honor marked his 25th HCAC Coach of the Year award.  The coaching staff also includes Geoff Wayton, Christy Sherman and Liz Evans.

Two school records also fell to lead Rose-Hulman event victories.  Mary-Helen Shomba ran the No. 9 ranked NCAA Division III time in the 60-meter hurdles to win in a time of 8.90 seconds, shattering her own school record by .14 seconds.  Kyle Brownell tied Rose-Hulman's high jump school record by clearing 6' 8 1/4", matching the previous mark of Jeff Harrison set in 1988.

Shomba added a second win in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.53 seconds.  She was also part of the winning 4-x-200 meter relay, joining Katrina AgustinEmily Peterson and Christina Rogers to take home first-place honors in 1:49.22.

Kristian Zadlo rounded out the day's winners by taking home first-place honors in the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.18 seconds.

Rose-Hulman added nine second-place performances on the afternoon.  Men's runner-ups included Dawson Allen in the 60 (7.16 seconds); Evan Ammidown in the mile (4:26.14); Cameron Prisby in the pole vault (13' 11 1/4"); Jacob Sparks in the shot put (47' 3"); Tim Youndt in the triple jump (43' 2 1/2"); and Zadlo in the 400 (51.36).

The women's squad recorded three second-place finishes on Saturday.  Sydney Larson in the triple jump (33' 3 3/4"), Dara Smith in the 400 (1:01.58), and the 4-x-400 meter team of Peterson, Clare Bruns, Lois Cheatham and Smith came home in 4:14.56 for runner-up finishes.

Third-place honorees included Allen in the 200 (23.21 seconds); Nolan Gross in the mile (4:27.21); Ben Hall in the 800 (2:00.82); and Zadlo in the pole vault (13' 11 1/4").  Women's third-place finishes included Elle Ogden in the triple jump (31' 7 1/2"); Rogers in the 400 (1:01.95) and the distance medley relay team of Sarozjani Hunter, Karen Folz, Rachel Shubella and Haley Braker in 13:44.22.

Individuals from Rose-Hulman will compete at the Ohio Northern Last Chance Meet on Saturday March 7.  The NCAA Division III National Championships for any eventual national qualifiers with take place March 13-14 in Winston Salem, N.C.
